World field guide · Spirit-bond fantasy RPG
Fight beside a beast that can say no.
The Beastbound Marches is a spirit-bond fantasy RPG where power begins with consent. Great beasts choose mortal partners, share their gifts, and expect to be heard in return. Now royal courts are stealing those bonds to manufacture obedient fighters. You have been chosen by the Hollow Star, a lineage that should not exist, and it remembers what the Chainwork was built to become.

The bond is the story, not a power-up
Companion fantasy often promises a lifelong bond and then treats the creature like a menu of abilities. The Beastbound Marches starts from a harder premise: what if the other half of the bond remained a person? A Crown Stag can refuse a dishonorable order. A wounded Cinderwing can fear the sky. A Thunder Wolf may trust your instincts in a hunt and reject your politics in a council hall.
Power grows from the quality of that relationship. Listening, keeping promises, understanding instinct, and surviving failure together all matter. A strong bond can create extraordinary coordination, but it never erases the beast's will. That makes the moments between battles as important as the battles themselves.
Six known lineages and one impossibility
Every lineage creates a different movement, temperament, and fighting language. Mortal training and crafted gear still matter, so two people bonded to the same lineage do not become the same fighter.
| Lineage | Shared fighting identity |
|---|---|
| Crown Stag | Guardianship, oath-sense, and force turned aside |
| Cinderwing | Momentum, heat, and dangerous aerial charges |
| Mirror Mantis | Reading motion and punishing repeated attacks |
| River Leviathan | Pressure, patience, and control of contested space |
| Stone Bear | Stability, endurance, and strength carried through pain |
| Thunder Wolf | Pack movement, pursuit, and attacks chained with allies |
Then there is the Hollow Star. It might appear as a black-antlered cat, a many-winged serpent, a wolf with constellations moving inside its shadow, or something shaped partly by your own character. It cannot be commanded. It does not explain why it chose you. Its stranger gifts touch absence, gravity, silence, and paths that should not exist, but they do not make every other bond irrelevant.
The kingdom found a way to remove the choice
The royal courts call the Chainwork modernization. Their argument is not empty: kingdoms built around voluntary bonds depend on the choices of powerful beasts, border towns can be left exposed, and an unpredictable bond can reshape a war. The Crown Menagerie wants power that can be issued, trained, and replaced on command.
Its answer is to cut the bond-mark from a living beast and graft the stolen ability into a soldier. The result is fast, obedient, and devastating. The spirit left behind is diminished, furious, and slowly dying. Free Bond clans want the foundries destroyed. The Ash Lancers raid Chainwork transports. Cities caught between them still need protection, and the buried titan beneath the Wyrdwood is beginning to wake.
A relationship changes the map
The Marches are built around places that mean different things to different beings: a neutral town grown around a covenant tree, thermal storms crossed by deserter riders, drowned roads used by leviathans, glass-silk cities shaped by chitin craft, and a forest whose geography follows the dreams of something underground.
Your bond affects how those places receive you. A Stone Bear may know a migration route no court map records. A Crown Stag can hear a broken oath in a peace meeting. The Hollow Star recognizes the Chainwork as a fragment of an older weapon, which makes your relationship central to the mystery without making you the only person whose choices matter.
Forge a future Champion together
Arena is upcoming, and the shape of it can still change. The direction is toward Champions who bring their history and world-born equipment with them. The Beastbound Marches adds one more question: what part of a fighter's strength belongs to the fighter alone, and what part only exists because somebody chose to stand beside them?
Your mortal discipline, crafted weapon, protective gear, bond lineage, and relationship quality can all shape the fighter you become. Start now, and any future Champion from the Marches can enter with more than a build. They can enter with a promise they have already proved they can keep.
Questions about The Beastbound Marches
What is a spirit-bond fantasy RPG?
It is a fantasy roleplaying world where a person and a supernatural beast share abilities through a relationship. In the Beastbound Marches, the bond is voluntary, develops through trust, and can change how both partners fight and make choices.
Is the bonded beast a pet or summon?
No. A bonded beast is a character with its own instincts, loyalties, limits, and right to refuse. It can disagree with you, protect something you would abandon, or withdraw trust when the relationship is treated as ownership.
Can I choose my beast lineage?
Yes. The world supports lineages such as Crown Stag, Cinderwing, Mirror Mantis, River Leviathan, Stone Bear, and Thunder Wolf. The impossible Hollow Star can enter as your first bond or as a second forbidden connection, depending on how you begin.
What is the Chainwork?
The Chainwork is a royal process that cuts bond-marks from living beasts and grafts their power into soldiers who were never chosen. It creates obedient fighters while diminishing and slowly killing the captured spirits.
