Friends & Fables alternative.

Friends & Fables (fables.gg) crossed 100,000 players this year. They're the polished default for AI-assisted D&D 5e: an AI GM named Franz, multiplayer parties up to six, battle maps, image generation, the works. If D&D is what you want, they do it well. Here's where Creation OS fits the gaps.

What Friends & Fables does well

Tight integration with D&D 5e rules. Skill checks resolve cleanly. Combat with proper initiative and tactical positioning. Multiplayer that actually works for parties. Discord bot support. Free trial of 50 turns. The Franz GM persona is consistently well-tuned for fantasy adventure.

If you used to play weekly with a group and the calendar killed the campaign, Friends & Fables is closer to recovering that experience than anything else in 2026.

Where Creation OS is shaped differently

  • Genre-neutral, not D&D-pilled. Friends & Fables is built around 5e mechanics. Creation OS supports a dozen genres — fantasy (magic or martial), modern, noir, sci-fi, horror, post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk, pirate, western, historical, cozy — and treats each one differently in the engine. If you want noir, Friends & Fables doesn't fit. If you want cozy, definitely not.
  • Solo-first, not multiplayer. Their value scales with party size. Ours scales with campaign duration for a single player. Different problem, different solution.
  • Real economy and production. Their rule system tracks combat depth. Ours tracks ledger depth: properties, workforce, recipes, supply chains, prices that shift.
  • Mechanical state in a real database. They use D&D rules for resolution but still rely on LLM context for NPC consistency and inventory. We use Postgres for both. NPCs survive past chapter 2.

Pick Friends & Fables if

  • You want D&D 5e specifically. Skill checks, classes, levels.
  • You want to play with friends, not solo.
  • You want battle maps and tactical combat.
  • You want a polished, well-marketed, established platform.

Pick Creation OS if

  • You want a non-D&D genre — cozy, noir, sci-fi, anything.
  • You play solo and don't want a party to coordinate.
  • You want a real economy underneath, not a combat-first ruleset.
  • You're running a long campaign and tired of NPC drift.

Honest summary

Both are real, polished, working products. Friends & Fables is best-in-class for AI D&D 5e. Creation OS is for everything D&D isn't.
