Friends & Fables alternative.

Friends & Fables (fables.gg, sometimes searched as "fable gg") is a polished AI platform for D&D 5e. We sat down and played it before writing this. If D&D 5e is what you want, it does that job well. Here is an honest, hands-on read on where Creation OS is built differently.

What Friends & Fables does well

The AI narrator, Franz, writes competent, atmospheric prose. NPC relationships update mechanically as you play - meet someone and your standing with them ticks up from a stranger to an acquaintance. There are tactical battle maps with a grid and character tokens. The D&D 5e integration is genuine: classes, races, alignment, levels, hit points, armor class, the full ruleset.

If you used to play weekly with a group and the calendar killed the campaign, Friends & Fables is a real attempt at recovering that experience, and it supports multiplayer parties when you want them.

What we noticed playing it

  • It is D&D 5e by default, not by choice. Create a new world and it loads the D&D 5e SRD automatically - races, classes, monsters, items, spells. You opt out of D&D, you do not opt in. Every world we saw was tagged Fantasy.
  • World-building is manual. A new world is a blank wiki. You populate Races, Classes, Factions, Monsters, Items, Spells, Feats, Quests, Areas, and Points of Interest yourself. There is no generate-a-world-from-a-concept step.
  • Memory is searchable, not guaranteed. Their own memory panel states that memories "may be automatically brought into context when relevant" and lets you manually pin items so the narrator does not miss them. It is a probabilistic recall system, not a guaranteed per-turn state injection.
  • It is still in early access beta. The beta banner is on every screen, and during our session character and world art frequently failed to load.

Where Creation OS is shaped differently

  • Genre-neutral, not D&D-pilled. Creation OS supports a dozen genres - fantasy, modern, noir, sci-fi, horror, post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk, pirate, western, historical, cozy - and the engine treats each one differently. Horror has a sanity system; cozy has a tone contract that suppresses combat and urgency.
  • The world is generated for you. Answer a few questions and Creation OS builds a named world with factions, NPCs, locations, and a history before you play turn one. No blank wiki to fill in.
  • A real economy underneath the fiction. Properties, workforce, recipes, supply chains, and prices that shift - tracked as database rows, not improvised by the narrator. Friends & Fables tracks combat depth; Creation OS tracks ledger depth.
  • Guaranteed mechanical state. NPCs, inventory, and currency live in a real database and are injected into every turn. They do not depend on a recall system finding them. NPCs survive past chapter 2.

Pick Friends & Fables if

  • You want D&D 5e specifically. Skill checks, classes, levels.
  • You want to play with friends, not solo.
  • You want tactical battle maps and grid-based combat.
  • You enjoy hand-building a setting wiki before you play.

Pick Creation OS if

  • You want a non-D&D genre - cozy, noir, sci-fi, anything.
  • You want the world generated for you, not assembled by hand.
  • You want a real economy underneath, not a combat-first ruleset.
  • You are running a long campaign and tired of NPC drift.

Honest summary

Friends & Fables is a real, competent product and the better choice if D&D 5e is the goal. Creation OS is for everything D&D isn't: genre-neutral worlds, generated not hand-built, with an economy and guaranteed memory holding the long campaign together.
