Surviving Combat: Fighting, Rolling, and Tactics

Combat in Creation OS is fast, narrative-driven, and consequential. There are no turn-order menus or grid maps - you describe what you do and the narrator handles the mechanics. Here is how it works.

Starting a Fight

Combat begins when you (or the narrator) escalate a situation. This can happen naturally:

  • "I draw my sword and charge the bandit"
  • "I shoot first"
  • "I tackle the guard before he can sound the alarm"

The narrator will transition into combat mode, describing the scene and asking for your first action.

Making Attacks

When you attack, the narrator asks you to roll dice. Click the dice button in the input bar or type your roll.

The flow:

  1. You declare your action ("I swing at the nearest enemy")
  2. The narrator calls for a roll (Roll to hit)
  3. You roll - the result appears as a card showing your total, the target number, and the outcome tier
  4. The narrator describes what happens

Your equipped weapon, stats, and any active abilities are all factored in automatically.

The Seven Outcome Tiers

Every roll produces one of seven results, from catastrophic to legendary:

  • Catastrophic (natural 1) - Something goes very wrong. Your weapon might break, you might hit an ally, or the situation escalates.
  • Fail (missed by 5+) - A clear miss or failed action.
  • Narrow Fail (missed by 1-4) - So close. The narrator may offer a costly alternative.
  • Narrow Success (just made it) - You succeed, but barely.
  • Solid (exceeded by 3-5) - A clean hit, confident execution.
  • Exceptional (exceeded by 6-9) - A standout moment with bonus effects.
  • Legendary (natural 20 or +10) - Maximum impact. Golden effects erupt on screen.

Catastrophic and Legendary outcomes trigger sandbox ripples - permanent changes to your world state.

Fortune Modifiers

Your rolls are not pure luck. The Fortune System reads your current situation and applies modifiers:

  • Good equipment in working condition helps you
  • Damaged or broken gear gives penalties (-1 or -2)
  • Allied territory gives +1, hostile territory gives -1
  • A nearby nemesis with high threat gives -1

Check the dice button glow to gauge your fortune before committing to a fight. Red tint means the odds are stacked against you.

Tactical Tips

Use the environment. You are not limited to "I attack." Try:

  • "I kick the table into him and run for the window"
  • "I shoot the fuel canister next to the enemy"
  • "I throw sand in his eyes and go for the disarm"

Retreat is valid. Not every fight needs to end in victory. Running, surrendering, or negotiating mid-combat are all options.

Use your abilities. If you have learned special abilities, the Ability Tray shows them below the input. Click one to activate it mid-combat.

Equipment matters. A character in full plate armor with a masterwork sword rolls very differently than one in rags with a rusty knife. Invest in your gear.

Override when it counts. If you have earned Override tokens (from bad rolls with bad luck), you can spend one to guarantee your next action succeeds. The purple lightning bolt button appears next to your input when you have tokens available. Save it for the killing blow or the desperate escape.

What Happens When You Die?

Character death is possible but rare. The narrator will usually give you chances to avoid it - narrow escapes, last-minute rescues, or costly survival bargains. If your character does die, you can create a new one and continue in the same world.

Common Combat Questions

Q: How do I heal? Rest, use consumables, visit a healer, or use healing abilities. Tell the narrator what you are doing.

Q: Can I run from a fight? Yes. Describe your escape attempt. The narrator may call for a roll depending on the situation.

Q: How do I know what I am fighting? Enemies are described when they appear. Your OmniCodex tracks characters you have encountered, including hostile ones.

Q: Can I fight alongside other characters? Yes. Friendly characters in your party will fight alongside you. Their actions are managed automatically.
